Local waterway information:

You’ll find our boats at the Ocean Gate Yacht Basin on Bayview Ave. in Ocean Gate, NJ. This conveniently located marina sits at the junction where Tom's River meets the Barnegat Bay. You'll be able to sail in a seashore atmosphere, anchor in a quiet harbor or even do a bit of crabbing to take a chance at catching your dinner for the evening. There are many spots to just drop the hook, dock and dine or simply grab a mooring ball.

A sail west on Tom's River reveals the beautiful shoreline adorned with the “gingerbread” style homes of Island Heights or keeps you entertained by watching one of the regional yacht clubs’ match races. At the head of the river you’ll find a marina where you can leave the boat docked outside while you venture in for some seafood at Jack Baker’s Lobster Shanty. At the mouth of the river we're often treated to the Wednesday night fireworks show that Seaside Heights puts on for its boardwalk visitors.

Heading south on the bay you can make your way onto the Forked River for a lunch stop at the Captain's Inn or grab a transient slip at Southwinds Marina for a dip in the pool at the tiki bar.

Join in the fun at Tice’s Shoal, a spot where you’ll find many boats anchored and people swimming, lounging, playing in the water or catching some sun. Or simply sail south to the Barnegat Lighthouse and drop an anchor to enjoy its beauty at night.

Skilled sailors will be able to journey through either the Manasquan or Barnegat Inlets towards the Atlantic Ocean to make a trip to Cape May, Atlantic City or even northward towards Sandy Hook and New York Harbor.

Whether you stay inside the bay or venture out to the ocean you'll gain valuable sailing experience in a region that has a long sailing history. All while creating many treasured, life long memories with your family and friends!

Each subsequent class progresses to bigger vessels that are powered by inboard or outboard engines. This graduated learning process allows students to develop and reinforce practical "on-the-water" skills while also gaining additional boating knowledge, serving to gradually round out the sailor's education.

COURSES Descriptions:ASA 101:Basic Keelboat Sailing (No Prerequisite) - $ 450.00 per personSailors learn to sail a boat in light to moderate winds and sea conditions in familiar waters without supervision. This basic class emphasizes operating the boat under sail with a minimum of engine use. No previous sailing, auxiliary power or navigation skills are required.

This is a 3 day class begins dockside learning the physics of sailing, the parts of the boat plus safety and federal requirements. This on-shore discussion takes place for about 20% of the class while the remaining 80% is spent on the water learning sailing skills through practical hands-on application. Having two nights to review the material, following the frist two days of class, allows for better retention of the material.

Additional items covered are a crew overboard recovery, the points of sail, knot tying, tacking and jibing, plus proper VHF radio procedures and more. Our small class size ensures that each student has ample time to learn at each station.

In addition to performing the "on the water skills" students take a written test to achieve the ASA certification. The fee includes the log book, text book, ASA certification materials and your first year's ASA membership. Successful candidates earn a National Safe Boating Certificate (NASBLA). The certificate satisfies the boating licensing requirement for the states of Delaware and Pennsylvania. New Jersey requires a separate Safe Boating license.

ASA 103: Basic Coastal Cruising (Prerequisite: ASA 101) - $ 475.00 per person

Sailors will be able to cruise safely in local waters in moderate winds and sea conditions as both skipper and crew on an auxiliary (powered) sailboat of about 30 feet in length.

Additional items include maneuvering the boat in forward and reverse in and out of boat slips, as well as along docks. Practice anchoring, a familiarization of charts, along with basic navigation and rules of the road, trimming the sails for greater efficiency, an introduction to a mid-size cruising sailboat's boat systems and basic engine maintenance are also covered.

This is a three day class with most of the time spent on the water. It includes a written test to achieve certification.

(A limited number of spaces are available for students to stay onboard during their class. There is an additional fee of $ 50.00 pp/per night for this service.)

ASA 104: Bareboat Chartering (Prerequisite ASA 101 & 103) - $ 750.00 per person

An advanced cruising course designed for individuals with cruising experience. The student will act as both skipper and crew on a mid-30 foot auxiliary (powered) boat sailing by day in coastal waters.

This three day course is a first hand live aboard experience and teaches good trip planning by covering navigating underway, preparing for your destination, proper food provisioning and evaluating the weather to safely prepare for changes. A more thorough overview of boat systems and maintenance, as well as advanced docking and anchoring procedures is provided. It includes a written test for certification.

There will be two nights either at anchor or in a marina. All meals are included (with the exception of one dinner on shore).

The Boating Experience At the Jersey Shore

Want to go sailing in one of the best spots along the shore in New Jersey? Starting from the Ocean Gate Yacht Basin in Bayville, NJ you can get on board one of our boats to sail the Barnegat Bay.

Making their home at this marina are two Hunter 33s and a Hunter 216. The marina is located where the Tom's River travels to meet the bay, providing a natural safe haven for sailing. You'll be able to sail in a seashore atmosphere, anchor in a quiet harbor or even do a bit of crabbing to take a chance at catching your dinner for the evening. There are great “gunkholing” areas throughout the bay and rivers which are just perfect for an afternoon stop or great for overnight anchoring. When you're done sailing, you can fish or even take a swim off the back of the boat. Going ashore for family fun on the boardwalk is even available in Seaside Heights. What a great way to create lifelong memories, have fun and get some relaxation!

If you're looking for a dock and dine opportunity, you can head south to find a couple of options on the Forked River at the Captain's Inn tiki bar or the poolside restaurant at the Southwinds Marina. Just around the corner from the marina you can grab a mooring ball and catch the water taxi for a stop at Martell's Water's Edge. Or head all the way to the beginning of the Tom's River to grab a transient slip for a walk into town.

With steady wind all season long, this area is great for a sail at anytime. Anchor at Tice’s Shoal and walk across the beach to spend a day on the ocean. From the marina there's a sailing area of about 17 nautical miles north to Bay Head, NJ with sailable water stretching 12 nautical miles south to the entrance of the Inter-coastal waterway channel that connects Barnegat Bay and Little Egg Harbor. Access to the Atlantic Ocean is about 9 nautical miles south by boat when making your way through the Oyster Creek Channel through the Barnegat Inlet, from there a sail to Atlantic City or even Cape May is possible. Making your way through the Manasquan Inlet gets you closer to the ocean if you want to go north and head towards New York Harbor.

Our goal is to expand in other locations along the coast. We are targeting Atlantic City and also have had inquiries about sailing from the inlet near Cape May. We are actively looking for Owner Members so that we can place boats, both sail and  power, in these areas. Contact us at jerseyshore@sailtime.com or 866-SAIL101 (866-724-5101) for more information
