For the past seven years, SailTime Detroit has been helping sailors go sailing on Lake St. Clair in Detroit, which is also known as, “the Heart of the Great Lakes”. It’s a great place to explore as there’s always something new to see and do. Nearly every time you go out you see freighter traffic, either up-bound or down-bound on the freighter channel. Then there’s sailboat racing at least two or three days a week and sometimes we get to see the go-fast boats speeding across the lake.
On Lake St. Clair we sail out of Shore Club Apartments and Marina. You wouldn’t believe our entrance to the marina. It’s a tree-lined boulevard. And talk about amenities – heated outdoor pool, convenient bathhouse, exercise facility and sauna, picnic area, barbeque grills. And best of all, quick and easy access to Lake St. Clair.
Detroit Sailing Base Owner, Jim Kaza, says. “I can’t tell you how excited I am that we’re now sailing on Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie. I’ve spent most of my sailing life on Lake St. Clair and never had a day out there that I didn’t enjoy. It’s always been a great time with family, a great time with friends, and it’s always been nice to “escape” the day and just take the boat out on my own. Now, however, we’ve got another place to explore – Lake Erie!”
Once you’re on the lake you’ve got access to numerous restaurants on the Nautical Mile. You also have a view of the Grosse Pointe mansions on Lake Shore Drive that only boaters get to see. As a Member, when you want to take the kids over to Metropolitan Beach, sail on over and take them on a real adventure. And let’s not forget the world famous Jobbie Nooner over at Gull Island.
Lake Erie provides a whole new experience for our sailing members. Not only do you get to sail a great, wide-open lake, you now have access to Kelley’s Island, Put-in-Bay and Cedar Point as sailing destinations! You will surprised how easy it is to sail to all of those places. Cedar Point has a newer, up-to-date marina that makes staying there a real treat. Let alone, having a short walking distance to some of the greatest thrill rides in the nation!
On Lake Erie, SailTime Detroit is operating out of a great marina, Toledo Beach. It’s just north of Toledo, Exit 9 off of I-75. Now, residents of Northern Ohio and Southern Michigan can take advantage of the SailTime program, here. Toledo Beach has everything you could ask from a marina and more. Heated outdoor pool, convenient bath house and laundry, picnic areas, and a great little watering hole, the Sand Bar. Grab your lunch and take it with you, or relax outside and watch the water traffic. You will like kicking back and watching a boat parade.
Whether you live in Ohio or Michigan, now you can enjoy sailing without the maintenance, without the upkeep and without the hassle.
