For the tenth year in a row, several sailing instructors, who teach for our American Sailing Association (ASA) affiliated sailing schools, earned well deserved accolades for their efforts! The Outstanding Instructor Award is determined by the students who learned how to sail from them. While there are thousands of sailing instructors across the country, only thirty were selected from the reviews ASA received in 2013.
Of special note, our sailing base in Newport Beach, CA, which operates the Newport Beach Sailing School, had not one, but two instructors receive this award in 2013. Congratulations are in order for Captain Mike Kohl and Captain David Carlson. This is the third time Captain Mike has earned the sailing industry’s prestigious award and the first for Captain David. These two captains are in great company with their colleague, Captain Roger Philips, who has also been recognized with this revered award in past years.
Also, at our Milwaukee sailing base, James (Jim) C Stewart won the award again. Not a stranger to this award either, Jim has been named Outstanding by ASA before. He is one of the most competent instructors there is and know that Milwaukee turns out some of the most competent sailors there are on the water!
Our Boston sailing base, partners up with Black Rock Sailing, there, to train all of their members. For the 5th year in a row, Brenton Lochridge has won the outstanding award. There’s a lot to know beyond the basics when sailing the famous waters around Boston and it’s great to know our members get that level of instruction to ready them for all of it there.
Finally, Laurence R. McKay, who teaches for our Baltimore (Havre de Grace) sailing base as well as Philadelphia and occasionally at Jersey Shore too, won the award as well this year! He is noted as a “patient and knowledgable instructor who is trusted and well respected by his students”, reports Captain Cherie Starner, who owns and operates the Philadelphia and Jersey Shore sailing bases.
The sailing season for 2014 is just around the corner. So, now is the time to start making plans to get sailing lessons at any of our bases. Classes do fill up. The best availability to fit your schedule is found before the season even starts!
