Learn to Sail in Annapolis: Build Confidence with SailTime Annapolis ASA Sailing School

If you’ve ever dreamed of setting sail on the Chesapeake Bay, there’s no better place to start your journey than SailTime Annapolis. Our American Sailing Association (ASA) certified sailing school is designed to help sailors of all levels — from beginners to seasoned cruisers — gain the skills, knowledge, and confidence to safely skipper their own sailboat.

Whether you’re aiming to sail one of our modern SailTime yachts or any keelboat anywhere in the world, our learn to sail program in Annapolis will help you achieve your goals.

Why Annapolis is the Best Place to Learn to Sail

Annapolis is known as America’s sailing capital — and for good reason. The Chesapeake Bay offers a wide variety of sailing conditions, from protected waters offering perfect conditions to learn to sail to open stretches of water where you can practice navigation, anchoring, and sail trim. The backdrop of historic landmarks, lighthouses, and abundant wildlife creates an unforgettable learning environment.

When you learn to sail in Annapolis, you’re gaining access not just to a location, but to a rich maritime tradition that inspires sailors of all ages.

Our Goal: Your Confidence and Competence

At SailTime Annapolis, our mission is simple: to give you the confidence and competence to safely skipper your own sailing vessel. Whether you’re interested in sailing as a relaxing pastime, preparing for bareboat charters, or working toward membership in our SailTime fleet, our courses are designed to help you reach your next milestone on the water.

We tailor our lessons to all experience levels:

  • First-time sailors who want a fun, supportive introduction to the sport.
  • Intermediate sailors looking to expand their skills.
  • Experienced sailors seeking formal certifications or advanced training.

ASA Certified Courses for Every Skill Level

Our Annapolis sailing school offers a full range of American Sailing courses, including:

  • ASA 101 – Basic Keelboat Sailing: Where everybody starts to learn to sail. Acquire the fundamentals of sailing, terminology, and boat handling on a responsive and stable keelboat designed for instruction.
  • ASA 103 – Basic Coastal Cruising: Build on your ASA 101 skills and learn how to handle a cruising sailboat under a variety of conditions, including anchoring, docking, and basic navigation.
  • ASA 104 – Bareboat Cruising: Prepare for multi-day cruising and chartering by mastering sailboat systems, passage planning, and safety procedures.
  • ASA 105 – Coastal Navigation: Gain essential skills in chart reading, dead reckoning, and electronic navigation.

Each course provides extensive time at the helm and hands-on learning to ensure that you’re not just checking boxes — you’re truly developing your seamanship as you learn to sail.

Our Boats: Modern, Safe, and Fun to Sail

We select our training vessels with care. All of our sailboats are modern, well-maintained, and equipped with the latest safety gear. These boats are chosen specifically for their comfort, stability, and responsiveness — qualities that help new sailors build confidence and experienced sailors refine their skills.

Whether you’re learning on one of our smaller keelboats for ASA 101 or transitioning to a larger cruising yacht for ASA 103 and beyond, you’ll appreciate sailing vessels that are a pleasure to handle.

Small Class Sizes, Big Learning Impact

Our learn to sail classes are intentionally kept small — typically with no more than three students per instructor. This ensures that you’ll have plenty of time at the helm, direct coaching from your instructor, and the opportunity to master each skill before moving on.

Our instructors are all USCG-licensed captains and ASA-certified educators. They’re more than just expert sailors — they’re patient, friendly, and passionate about helping you succeed.

A Sailing School That Fits Your Life

We know your time is valuable, and that you want to learn to sail to enhance your lifestyle — not compete with it. That’s why we offer:

  • Flexible scheduling: Weekend, weekday, and custom private lessons are available to fit your calendar.
  • Hands-on instruction: No endless classroom lectures — you’ll be on the water, learning by doing from day one.
  • A path to membership: Once you complete ASA 103, you’re eligible to join SailTime Annapolis and enjoy regular access to a modern yacht without the hassles of ownership.

Your Journey Doesn’t End at Graduation

Graduating from our sailing school is just the beginning. Whether you want to charter a boat for a dream vacation, skipper your own yacht, or become a SailTime member, your ASA certifications will open doors. And as part of our sailing community, you’ll have ongoing opportunities to grow your skills, meet fellow sailors, and enjoy the Chesapeake Bay.
