  • Where: Penn’s Landing Marina – Columbus Blvd. in Philadelphia, PA
  • When: 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM (time/dates may vary – as scheduled)

We strive to motivate students to enjoy their experience in a safe, productive and comfortable environment.

The beginning course prepares the student for day sailing on a boat powered only by the wind. Each subsequent class progresses to bigger vessels that are powered by inboard or outboard engines. This graduated learning process allows students to develop and reinforce practical “on-the-water” skills while also gaining additional boating knowledge, serving to gradually round out the sailor’s education.

After students complete a course they can take advantage of either our CrewTime or SailTime membership programs, providing time on board to continue to practice their new boating skills.

SailTime members participate in a required “Skipper Competency Check Out” to learn the skills required to take the boat out by themselves. During this process a new member may obtain ASA’s 101 & 103 courses certification.

– Classes are taught by USCGKelly Whartnaby_1-small Captains who are also certified ASA instructors.

COURSES Descriptions:

ASA 101:Basic Keelboat Sailing (No Prerequisite) – $ 495.00 per person Sailors learn to sail a boat in light to moderate winds and sea conditions in familiar waters without supervision. This basic class emphasizes operating the boat under sail with a minimum of engine use. No previous sailing, auxiliary power or navigation skills are required.

This is a 2 day class which begins dockside, learning the the parts of the boat, the physics and techniques of sailing, plus safety and federal requirements. The on-the-water portion includes learning the “sailing skills” through practical hands-on application.

Additional items covered are a crew overboard recovery, the points of sail, knot tying, tacking and jibing, plus proper VHF radio procedures and more.

Our small class size ensures that each student has ample time to learn at each station. In addition to performing the “on the water skills” students take a written test to achieve the ASA certification.

The fee includes the log book, text book, ASA certification materials and your first year’s ASA membership.

ASA 103: Basic Coastal Cruising (Prerequisite: ASA 101) – $ 495.00 per person  Sailors will be able to cruise safely in local waters in moderate winds and sea conditions, as both skipper and crew, on an auxiliary (powered) sailboat of about 30 feet in length.

Additional items include maneuvering the boat  in and out of boat slips, as well as along docks. Practice anchoring, a familiarization of charts, along with basic navigation and rules of the road, trimming the sails for greater efficiency, an introduction to a mid-size cruising sailboat’s boat systems and basic engine maintenance are also covered.

This is a three day class with most of the time spent on the water. It includes a written test to achieve certification.

(A limited number of spaces are available for students to stay onboard during their class. There is an additional fee of $ 50.00 pp/per night for this service.)

ASA 104: Bareboat Chartering (Prerequisite ASA 101 & 103) – $ 825.00 per person An advanced cruising course designed for individuals with cruising experience. The student will act as both skipper and crew on a mid-30 foot auxiliary (powered) boat sailing by day in coastal waters. This three day course is a first hand live aboard experience and teaches good trip planning by covering navigating underway, preparing for your destination, proper food provisioning and evaluating the weather to safely prepare for changes. A more thorough overview of boat systems and maintenance, as well as advanced docking and anchoring procedures is provided. It includes a written test for certification. There will be two nights either at anchor or in a marina. All meals are included (with the exception of one dinner on shore).

ASA 105: Coastal Navigation (No Prerequisite) – $ 495.00 per person This challenging course covers a comprehensive curriculum which includes the navigational theory required to safely navigate a vessel in coastal or inland waters. It is held in a classroom setting and there will be no time on board a vessel. (We recommend this course for ALL boaters. The course includes: Reading chart symbols, chart navigation, dead reckoning, plotting techniques, tides and currents, determining set and drift calculations, compass steering, navigation rules and aides, navigating in the fog, taking bearings, 3 bearing fixes, learning to use the USCG navigation publication tables, the light list, how to obtain and follow the notice to mariners, electronic fixes, compass to true and compass deviation plus an introduction to electronic navigation equipment. The textbook and a book with practice problems, a supportive instructional DVD, a practice chart and ASA certification are included in the fee. Students should bring a parallel ruler, dividers, a calculator and a pencil sharpener to class. (* Please note: Parallel ruler and dividers are NOT included. We can provide help if you need to order these items.)
