Basic Keelboat (ASA 101) Included With All Memberships

ASA 101 is included with all SailTime San Diego memberships.

Graduates of 101 will have an understanding of sailing terms, boat parts, rules of the road, points of sail, sail trim, basic navigation, docking, boat rigging, and more. A student will graduate this course with the ability to skipper a small keelboat in familiar waters.

For new sailors, ASA 101 will be taught aboard a 22′ sailboats. Experienced sailor can challenge out of 101 by taking the written exam and moving onto ASA 103

Coastal Cruising (ASA 103) Included With All Membership Below 37′

ASA 103 is included with all SailTime San Diego Membership on boats below 37′.

Students of ASA 103 will learn the skills to perform as skipper of a 30-37 foot boat while sailing in coastal waters. Upon completion students will be able to demonstrate the ability to dock under power, anchor in normal conditions, properly make changes to the sail plan, navigate in coastal waters,  and have a more in depth knowledge of the boats systems including fuel, electrical, plumbing, etc.

Bareboat Cruising (ASA 104) Included With All Memberships Above 37′

ASA 104 is included with all SailTime San Diego memberships on boats above 37′

Students will learn to skipper a sailboat, 37′-51′ during a multi-day cruise in coastal waters in moderate to heavy wind and seas. Topics to be covered include provisioning, galley operations, boat systems, auxiliary engine operation, routine maintenance, advanced sail trim, coastal navigation including basic chart plotting and GPS operation, multiple-anchor mooring, docking, health & safety, emergency operations, weather interpretation, and dinghy/tender operation.

ASA 104 will included an overnight stay, on anchor, in Mission Bay.

Coastal Navigation (ASA 105)

ASA 105 is required for all skippers wanting to sail North of Mission Bay

In this home study class, students will learn the navigational theory and hands on skills needed to safely sail a vessel in near coastal or inland waters with a focus on real world, practical navigation in a class room setting. Students move from dead reckoning to more advanced piloting incorporating current, leeway, and GPS navigation. Students learn to use tide and current tables, light lists, Chart No. 1, Notice to Mariners, and other tools.

All members will complete training/orientation before using SailTimes without a base skipper aboard. All lesson plans will be customized based on your current resume and the membership you have purchased. Depending on boat availability, training will take place over consecutive days using member SailTimes.
