Sailing From Historic Boston Harbor

Boston Harbor is an incredibly exciting place to sail for both its past and present. The harbor was the site of the Boston Tea Party and the Battle of Bunker Hill, and waterfront commerce continues to be an important part of Boston’s business. The U.S.S. Constitution (“Old Ironsides”) was built in Boston Harbor in the 1790’s and once again calls the Harbor home, bridging the past and the present. Today, the Harbor is home to the 16-island Boston Harbor Islands State Park.

Boston is such an exciting place to sail. You can sail around the historic harbor islands and go ashore to picnic or sight-see with your family and friends. You can take a short sail north to Marblehead or Salem. You can enjoy a weekend trip to Provincetown on Cape Cod. Or you can plan a longer trip to Block Island or Martha’s Vineyard. Come and explore all that Boston Harbor and Cape Cod Bay have to offer.

The Marina

Fan Pier Marina is Boston’s newest marina, located in South Boston. The Marina was built in 2009 and hosted the Volvo Ocean Race’s U.S. stopover and the 2012 Extreme Sailing Series. The Marina offers incredible views of the Boston skyline and a quick path to the outer harbor. In fact, it is the Boston marina closest to open water.

The marina has full-time dock staff to help you in and out as needed. There is also an unloading area and available dock carts. Cafe seating and two large greens offer nice spots to relax and watch boats sail by.

The Neighborhood

Fan Pier is a 9 city block development between the Institute for Contemporary Art and the Moakley Courthouse in South Boston. When complete, it will host more than 3 million square feet of retail, residences, offices, and restaurants. It will be THE city center on the waterfront, and some have called it the “new Boston.” The site currently hosts three on-site restaurants with many more within walking distance. Fan Pier is also close to Rowes Wharf and downtown Boston.

In the neighborhood, there are over a dozen restaurants, bars, and cafes. From Legal Seafood to the Barking Crab, and from Jerry Remy’s to Salvatore’s, you can satisfy your craving to almost any type of post-sail food. Plus there are small sandwich shops and breakfast cafes to prepare you for your day on the water.

Directions

The Fan Pier Marina is located at One Marina Park Dr (better known as 55 Northern Ave to GPS devices) which is located off of Seaport Blvd.
