Wayne was introduced to the sport of sailing on a little Minifish on lakes and rivers in upstate New York. After moving to the DC area, he and his wife Karen took some sailing lessons in Annapolis, and joined a boat sharing program that was based on the Chesapeake Bay where they sailed boats of 27-31 feet. Like the story of so many in sailing, each new venture led to a larger boat. In the fall of 1998 he acquired a share of a 33 foot hunter through a work colleague, and with that opportunity his passion for sailing took wings! And yes, over the years, the boats keep getting bigger.
Wayne is a Certified Public Accountant and served most of his 32 year accounting career as Chief Financial Officer for the National Education Association in Washington, DC (1980-2005). In 2004, as he approached retirement, he came across an advertisement in a sailing magazine for a SailTime business opportunity. In 2005 he acquired the SailTime Virginia territory and established a new SailTime base and ASA sailing school near Virginia Beach. He operated the Virginia Beach Base from 2005 to 2020. During that time he grew one of the most successful SailTime ASA sailing schools, which included a Navy contract for ASA 101-106 training for navy personnel.
Wayne was one of the original 10 base owners who purchased the SailTime license and assets in 2006. In addition to serving as SailTime CFO, he also served as President and Chief Executive Officer of SailTime from 2007 – 2009 following the ownership transition. During that time he was instrumental in the conversion of SailTime from a licensing group to a franchise organization.
In 2020 Wayne sold his interest in SailTime Virginia Beach (now called SailTime Chesapeake Bay South) and its ASA sailing school. He continues his corporate role as SailTime CFO where he is responsible for the strategic financial operations of the business and serves on the SailTime Executive Committee. He is also a member of the board of directors of Security Benefit Corporation in Topeka, KS, and First Security Benefit Life Insurance Company of New York. In addition he served as Chairman of the advisory board of California Casualty Indemnity Exchange, located in San Mateo, California, until 2022. Wayne has had several blue water experiences including an 8 ½ day sail from St. Thomas to Key West and has chartered in multiple locations around the world.
